To the Parent/Caregiver of a Child

We know seeking support for your child is a significant step and one of the most meaningful gifts you can offer. Therapy can equip your child with essential tools to navigate life's challenges, helping them understand and manage their feelings, build healthy relationships, and develop a positive self-image. By addressing emotional and behavioral issues early on, therapy sets the foundation for a healthier, happier future.

We are honored to come alongside your child, and in that way come alongside you. Below is some helpful information for you as your child begins therapy.

  • Therapy for kids typically addresses a range of emotional, behavioral, and developmental issues that may be impacting their daily lives and overall well-being. This can include:

    Anxiety and stress

    Depression

    Behavioral problems

Tough Transitions such as changing schools, graduating, gaining a sibling, moving, etc.

Trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Family issues, such as divorce or separation

    Grief and loss

Bullying, peer rejection, and social isolation

    Low self-esteem

  • At Self Space, our primary focus is on building an authentic, safe, therapeutic relationship with your child. The therapy journey will be strengths-based and trauma-informed, prioritizing partnership, acceptance, and compassion. We are committed to making therapy collaborative, curious and joyful experience!

Therapists will use age-appropriate techniques, such as play therapy, art therapy for kids, and cognitive-behavioral therapy for kids (CBT and DBT), to help children express their feelings, understand their emotions, and develop healthy coping mechanisms and positive communication skills.

Additionally, therapy for kids often involves working with families to create a supportive home environment and to equip parents with effective strategies to assist their child's development and emotional health.

  • Effective communication between you, your child, and the therapist is crucial. We encourage open discussions with your child's therapist about how they handle confidentiality and what information will be shared with you. Building a trusting relationship with your kid's therapist can help ensure that your child feels safe and supported, fostering a positive therapeutic experience.

Information that minors disclose to therapists will be kept confidential. However, your therapist will inform you and your child of the legal exceptions to confidentiality, and should such an exception arise, will share information as required by law.

Examples of such exceptions include but are not limited to: significant self-harm, suicidal ideation, or threat of harm to another person; abuse of a child; abuse of an incapacitated adult.

Except for situations such as those mentioned above, therapists will not share details of what occurs in session with parents or caregivers. Therapists may share general information (e.g. treatment approach, recommended ways that caregivers can support their child) with parents and caregivers so that you can successfully contribute to your child's therapeutic experience. Additionally, therapists may request that parents or caregivers engage in caregiver-only sessions to plan and practice how best to support your child.

  • We understand that most caregivers schedule their child's therapy, help them complete the intake paperwork, and pay for therapy. Our intake coordinator will work with you to help set up the first therapy appointment for your child, and can send the intake forms and credit card authorization directly to you for the sake of simplicity. You are welcome to contact your child’s therapist with scheduling or billing questions directly.

  • We will keep a credit card on file for your child, and that card will be charged at midnight the night of any session attended. The cancellation policy is 72 hours.

Please let your child’s therapist know if you would like a superbill to submit to your insurance for reimbursement. This will be emailed to you directly once a month when requested.

  • We are not able to provide a recommendation, evaluation, or opinion, in any legal forum relating to separation, divorce, child custody, visitation, or parenting plans.
