I am so glad you are here. Whether this is your first time working with a professional counselor or you are seeking to change counselors, congratulate yourself—it is a big step to trust yourself and seek support. I applaud you for taking action to heal, discover, and invest in your own journey.
I work with individuals and couples who are looking to explore who they are and how they can make sense of the world around them more clearly. Folks who may be experiencing anxiety and depression, or even trying to figure out if that is what they should call it. In my work with couples I look to support and facilitate healthy communication and individual and collective understanding.
My approach to therapy is grounded in the understanding that we are all a collection of our experiences, but our experiences do not have to dictate how we live or who we will become. My style is eclectic, client centered, and open minded. I often draw from somatic therapy, narrative therapy, psychodynamic therapy, inner-child work, trauma-informed care, and motivational interviewing. I am here to partner with and support you on your journey to radical self-love, healing, growth, and more effective communication in your relationships. This journey will likely not always be easy, but if you put in the work, with my support, it can be deeply rewarding.
I hold a holistic philosophy of therapy. Mental health is one aspect of our overall health. Many people think therapy is just something for crises—yes, therapy is great in times of crisis, but it can be so much more than that. I consider therapy a life companion. We are all in different, ever-fluctuating stages in our lives, and those fluctuations can be negative or positive. Therapy can be a constant that guides us through life’s difficult times and makes sure that we celebrate ourselves when things are going well. As we work to eliminate the stigma of working with a therapist/counselor, I encourage people to shift their perspective from “I have to go to therapy,” to “I get to go to therapy.” Therapy is a time when you get to focus on you, your growth, your goals, and your journey.
If you are considering therapy with me, you should know a bit about my background. I’m a typical inner-city kid. I grew up in Philadelphia . . . think Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Abbott Elementary. A first-generation college student, I attended Temple University and earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology with a concentration in developmental psychology. I attended the University of Pennsylvania for my Master’s degree in clinical social work. During my undergraduate studies, I read and studied thinkers like bell hooks, Maya Angelou, Patricia Hill Collins, Audre Lorde, and James Baldwin, which strengthened my knowledge and practice of multicultural work.
The path that led me to Self-Space was quite winding. I worked in education for 13 years. For 8 of those years, spanning my undergraduate and graduate studies, I worked in a Montessori school. After graduate school I worked in higher education at a few colleges and universities. I counseled students; led diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives; and worked in residence life. I have also worked in corporate America doing education and DEIA work—that was an experience all its own, so if you work in corporate America, I definitely understand your experience.
Personally, I enjoy watching too much television, being a foodie, finding recipes on social media that I’m probably not actually going to make (but of course saving them anyway), and doing educational things like reading or listening to podcasts. I am a child of the 90s, so 90s music of all genres is the soundtrack to my life no matter what the situation.
